Most people hearing the words “salt water” naturally think of ocean water, but in the world of swimming pools, “salt water” or “salt pool” refers to one that uses a salt chlorine generator for sanitization. Salt water pools contain only 3,000 parts per million of salt, which is only a tiny fraction of the amount of salt found in ocean water.

Salt is added to pool water in conjunction with the installation of a salt chlorine generator.  When pool salt (NaCl) is dissolved in a saltwater pool, the salt chlorine generator system electrolyzes the salt and turns the chloride (Cl) part of the salt into chlorine. This chlorine dissolves in the water to perform the same pool maintenance functions as conventional liquid chlorine. The chlorine produced by a saltwater pool is of higher quality than regular chlorinated pools and does not have the negative side effects commonly associated with traditional chlorine pools, such as the smell, red eyes, and itchy skin.
